Berber Ecomuseum of Ourika

À 37 km de Marrakech

At the foot of the Ourika Valley, in the pottery village of Tafza, a tall earthen house has stood guard over the village square for more than a century. It is here, about 37 km from Marrakech and a few minutes from the Setti Fatma waterfalls, that you'll find the Ourika Berber Ecomuseum, the first ecomuseum in Morocco. Step inside and you'll be immersed in the Berber culture of the High Atlas Mountains: pottery, carpets, jewelry, and vintage photographs tell the story of a mountain that has remained true to its traditional crafts.

Where is the ecomuseum located?

The ecomuseum stands in the village of Tafza, below the Ourika Valley, on the road that goes back towards Setti Fatma. This is achieved after approximately one hour drive From Marrakech, along the Ourika river, between cultivated terraces and villages clinging to the mountainside. Its location makes it an ideal stop on the way to the waterfalls: nature and culture can be combined in the same day.

«Talberj», a Berber house made of rammed earth

The ecomuseum is housed in a building that the locals call Talberj, «the tower». Built by two brothers in the 1910s-1920s, it has been patiently restored by the villagers using local materials: stone and rammed earth, roofs in bluish-grey clay from Tafza, pink sandstone from Oukaïmeden, white earth walls. Every detail tells the story of an architecture born from a self-sufficient society, where the mountain provided everything.

The house itself is an object of display. In Berber tradition, it embodies the world of the woman, guardian of the home, and is covered in protective signs Sun and fibula painted on the facades, sculpted motifs above the doors. This symbolism is found everywhere — on pottery, textiles, jewelry.

Tafza, a village of potters

Since ancient times, Tafza has lived off the pottery. Its very name comes from Berber. tafsout, which evokes spring, harvests, and fertility: a powerful symbol for this village where everyday objects are born from arid land. weaving It is also still very much alive there, practiced at home by the women of the village.

What do we discover inside?

The collection highlights the richness of the Berber culture of the High Atlas:

  • Pottery — the museum’s most important collection: butter churns, couscous dishes, milk jugs, from all over the High Atlas.
  • Carpets and weavings — a true «mirror of the Berber woman», where each motif tells the story of the stages of life.
  • Jewelry — diadems, fibulae, necklaces and bracelets, festive adornments which were part of the dowry and remained the property of the wife.
  • Photographs and documentaries — a collection that spans from the origins of photography in Morocco to the 1960s, including rare old films about the Berber tribes of the High Atlas.

Practical advice

  • Plan for currency in dirhams (DH) for entry and to buy pottery or carpets directly in the village.
  • The visit combines perfectly with Setti Fatma's waterfalls, all close by, for a beautiful day of nature and culture.
  • Expect to pay approximately one hour to one hour thirty to fully enjoy the house and its collections.
